Return authorization

Document that is issued to the foreign person whose authorization of residence or long-term stay is in a period of renewal or extension. It allows you to leave Spain and return to the national territory within 90 days.

  • The foreign person whose authorization of residence or stay is in a period of renewal or extension may be issued a return authorization that allows him to leave Spain and return to the national territory, provided that the applicant certifies that he has begun the procedures of renewal or extension of the title that entitles him to remain in Spain within the legal period established for that purpose.
  • Likewise, the holder of a foreigner’s identity card in force may request a return authorization in case of theft, loss, destruction or non-use of the card, provided that he certifies that he has submitted a request for duplication of the card.
  • The return authorization will be valid for no more than ninety days from the expiration of the residence or stay authorization, if requested prior to said expiration.
  • In the event that it is requested at a time after the expiration of the authorization of residence or stay, the authorization of return will be valid no more than ninety days since it is granted.
  • When the trip responds to a situation of need, the return authorization will be processed on a preferential basis.
  • When the foreign person certifies that the trip responds to a situation of need and exceptional reasons exist, the return authorization referred to in the previous paragraph may be issued, with a validity of no more than ninety days from the granting of the return authorization, if the initial application for residence authorization or residence authorization has been resolved favourably.
  • Competent authority
    • The return authorization will be granted by the Delegate or Subdelegate of the competent Government, by the Commissioner General for Foreigners and Borders or by the persons holding the police stations and border posts of the National Police Force.
  • Period of validity
    • During the validity of the ninety days of the return authorization there will be no limitation of entries and exits with a single document.
  • Return authorization
    • In accordance with European Union law, the return authorization will only be valid for entry through the Spanish authorized border crossing points.
